A 'Ten Teddies' Birthday - Thanks to The Emory; 45 Park Lane; Four Seasons at Park Lane & Mandarin Oriental, Hyde Park - London - March 2026

Arriving at The Emory in Long-wheelbased BMW Style

At noon on the Saturday one of The Emory's BMW i7, long-wheelbase electric limo fleet was waiting outside Four Seasons at Tower Bridge to 'whisk' me to the hotel.

OK, Saturday protesters in London meant we were delayed near Raffles, London at The OWO. However, my driver Sudhir had worked for The Hinduja brothers and so I had fun swapping stories from my Bank of England days about that newsworthy family.

A Second Stay at The Emory - Even Better Than The First

Rosa (Assistant Director of Guest Services) was waiting to welcome me. I was in a Corner Suite (with a window that fully opens) before I knew it again & barely had time to acknowledge all the "welcome back Mr Frew"s from the door staff.

The Surrenne Spa

Rosa pointed out a Surrenne Spa towel embroidered with my initials. It was only after a swim that I spotted my personalised robe too. I avoided the children-friendly times in the pool (8 - 10am & 3 - 5pm) and had such a relaxing time using the snow shower etc

The Emory Rooftop Bar; An Ice-cold 'SF Martini' & a Cedric Grolet Birthday Cake

When I returned from dinner at The Peninsula I got back at 11pm. A table had been reserved for me in The Rooftop Bar.

My ice-cold 'SF Martini' was perfect but the change of clocks the next day, & all the surprises at dinner, meant I was happily exhausted. A Red Rose Cedric Grolet cake was produced with a candle but I could not eat it. Charming Veronika brought it to my suite & we had such a great conversation. A perfect end to my 'Birthday Eve'.

The Big Day Started with Breakfast in Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten's 'abc kitchens'

I slept brilliantly and my 'birthday breakfast' in Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten's 'abc kitchens' was heavenly.

Soft scrambled eggs with aged cheddar & broccoli was insanely good again and the waiting staff so fun to chat with.

I almost cried when I was presented with a stunning Cedric Grolet Easter Egg at the end of breakfast.

Reading The Genuine Weekend Financial Times

It was then back to the Surrenne Spa pool to read the GENUINE Weekend Financial Times. The wording of the birthday mockup Peninsula, London created still makes me emotional.

Leaving The Emory in BMW 7i Style

Sudhir drove me to 45 Park Lane in the BWM 7i. I love it when the same driver is used for your whole hotel stay. My luggage was taken to Mandarin Oriental, Hyde Park for later.

Another Legendary Birthday Lunch at 45 Park Lane

At 45 Park Lane Ruinart champagne was poured immediately and there was a 45 Park Lane leather luggage tag on my table that wildly exceeded my expectations. Not only were my initials embossed on it but there was an air tag to help me find my lost luggage.

Japanese Wagyu From Heaven

Chef Elliott's food is sublime. I got the 'Taste of Cut' and had to leave the Japanese wagyu to last and savor every bite.

Tia's Extraordinarily Splendid Birthday Cake

My Duckmaster cane from The Peabody Hotel Memphis in chocolate on top and photos of me with Chef Wolfgang Puck, Chef Byron Puck, GM Lee, Chef Elliott etc around the base. It was an unbelievable birthday cake.

Tia also presented me with a Chocolate Easter Bunny with my initials on it, before the hotel guests receive them.

A London Birthday Would Not Be Complete Without a Visit to Four Seasons at Park Lane

Four Seasons at Park Lane has a very special place in Mr Sharp & my hearts. I will be there again tomorrow morning.

Incredible Friends From My Qatar Days

I met two of my best friends from Qatar days. One had flown in from Dubai the previous day and had funny & generous gifts for me. The other worked for Tony Blair in Downing Street and always has lots to tell me.

'SF Martinis' & a New Four Seasons at Park Lane Bag

While all this was going on Four Seasons' chef 'fixed' my 45 Park Lane cake, so it looked just as good, after its journey down the road with the 45 Park Lane doormen, and I could try it with my friends. It tasted even better than it looked, if that was possible.

I drank perfect 'SF Martinis' & Peter presented me with a new Four Seasons at Park Lane bag, with the Four Seasons logo inside. Will take it to Pavyllon tomorrow and get better photos of it.

A Better Than Perfect End to My Birthday at The Aubrey at Mandarin Oriental, Hyde Park - #imafan

I was overwhelmed, one more time, at The Aubrey at Mandarin Oriental, Hyde Park. Thanks to Assistant Guest Relations Manager Joseph keeping me company. It was so good exchanging hotel anecdotes with this enthusiastic guy.

A The Aubrey Bottle For My Special Vermouth For The 'SF Martini' That Matches The Perfection of This Martini

A 90 minute massage voucher and The Aubrey label bottle for the special vermouth  for the 'SF Martini'. It is beyond perfect.

Japanese Food On Another Level

There were so many mouth-wateringly delicious bites. The yellowtail sashimi with spicy ponzu, lemony shiso & chilli was sensational and the uni from heaven.

Services from Matteo & his team was perfectly judged for someone struggling to process such an astonishing day.

Mandarin Oriental, Hyde Park's Celebrated Doormen

As the evening started to end I because stressed over how my luggage & gifts would get into my black cab. Mandarin Oriental, Hyde Park's doormen made it all look so effortless & I felt embarrassed to have worried.

It was a '10 teddies'  (🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻) birthday. Building on the Peninsula's birthday mockup of the Weekend Financial Times on my 'Birthday Eve', everything on my birthday was beyond perfect. I have never been compelled to post 10 cover photos before.

From the flawless & friendly service at The Emory; to Tia's 45 Park Lane Birthday Cake; to my 45 Park Lane luggage tag; to seeing these important friends in my life on my birthday; to my new Four Seasons at Park Lane bag; to the Mandarin Oriental, Hyde Park massage voucher; the bottle for the special vermouth for the 'SF Martini' The Aubrey created, with the ingredients on the back; & the Mandarin Oriental, Hyde Park video wishing me happy birthday. Implausible perfection and so much thought & effort put into everything.
Picture
You are never too old for balloons but, unless access to the Straits of Hormuz is fully sorted out, helium may be in short supply in future. On the table Billlecart-Salmon champagne was chilling; there was an Earl Grey & Chocolate Birthday Cake; & a leather Maybourne luggage tag.
Picture
My Frette pillow case was embroidered with my initials too & just look at that view of Hyde Park.
Picture
The Red Rose Cedric Grolet Cake I was given in The Emory Rooftop Bar & the Cedric Grolet Easter Egg I was presented at breakfast. The latter is large, stunning & heavy. It contains crispy praline, crunchy pieces of fermented, dried & roasted cacao beans, intense salt Fleur de Sel, flourless chocolate biscuit, chocolate cream filling, cocoa gel & chocolate mousse. I hope to break it open with Graham & Clare's boys and share it with that awesome family.
Picture
57 & still laughing! The 'abc kitchens' team were brilliant.
Picture
Tia holds the cake & cannot thank Tim, at Dorchester Collection, enough for my spectacular 45 Park Lane luggage tag.
Picture
A photo of the 45 Park Lane birthday cake in all its glory. Next to it is a perfect ice-cold 'SF Martini'.
Picture
Balloons at every location this year. You can just see my new Four Seasons at Park Lane bag, in the shot with the cake.
Picture
The bag contains most of my bone marrow rice. I could not eat it but it was so delicious the next evening. Just look at that uni (sea urchin) piled up.
Picture
The bottle for the special vermouth for the 'SF Martini' The Aubrey created, with the ingredients on the back, at Soho House, 76 Dean Street. This was genius, so many bartenders ask me this question.
Picture
This end to the Mandarin Oriental, Hyde Park happy birthday video left me speechless.

An absolutely extraordinary read — it feels like experiencing every moment alongside you. The level of detail, consistency of service, and all the thoughtful, personalized touches truly showcase what world-class hospitality means. From the BMW i7 arrival to the flawless execution of every surprise (the personalized luggage tag, the cakes, the bespoke vermouth… incredible), this was clearly far more than a stay — it was a carefully curated experience.

What stands out just as much is the human element: the staff, the friendships, the conversations… all coming together to make this birthday genuinely unforgettable. “Implausible perfection” couldn’t be more fitting.

A true benchmark for modern luxury. 👏
And again happy birthday dear Si!

Made my evening getting these comments from you in Rome. My post seems to have left people speechless. All this, followed by Easter with mum in Shrewsbury, has left me exhausted. Going to Four Seasons at Park Lane tomorrow but will make it an easy day.

Good morning Simon,

Thanks for sharing and appreciate the mention, although it was all of the team’s ideas and actions and therefore I take no credit!

Have a lovely weekend ahead, hopefully the sun will pop out again.

Wow, this was a truly fantastic read. Sounds like the best stay. Your trip in the BMW reminds me of James Bond-esque style being whisked across central London! The serene spa sounds just that: serene. Incredibly kind gesture to have personalised gifts. Sounds the best birthday. Can they top this off for next time? Can’t wait to see you later this morning for coffee, at Four Seasons Park Lane.

Too special a birthday. Off to the Claridge’s bakery next. A beautiful day.

Simon,

Again, an unbelievable birthday experience. Truly exceptional and wonderful to read about. I will have to hear more about the snow shower - as a Canadian I'm not sure that would be as exciting for me.

I am going to do my best to be there for your next big birthday, not only to celebrate with you but to again experience a perfect Si Frew birthday.

All the best my friend. See you soon.

S xx

Thanks for commenting, despite your busy family life. The snow shower is exactly that. A shower where snow falls softly down. It is almost magical &, I guess targeted at Middle East clients, rather at Canadians.

Cannot wait to see you all in London.

What a extraordinary read of the actual birthday celebration as in real time with you, Simon.

From the the Four Seasons you are wisked away by BMW I7 Long-wheelbased electric limo waiting outside to the the Emory, how stylish as you arrived slightly late due to a protest. At least, you enjoyed a wonderful chin wag with your driver.

The birthday stay at the Emory seems to be memorable as the your first. The warm welcome back greetings from the staff and the persona greeting at the door by the Assistant Director of Guest Services, Rosa is worthy of royalty. I love corner room which was bestowed upon you with great affection. Corner rooms are so unique, and comfortable. Homey.

How wonderful to have a reservation at their rooftop bar without having to do so. It is pure platinum customer service. 11pm bar reservation is very hard to get. To top it off, your signature ice-cold SF martini was perfectly waiting for you is something else. Quel dommage that you could not have eaten the Red Rose Cedric Grolet cake. It sounds so delicious. I would have devoured it and washed it down with the martini.

I see your actual birthday with a breakfast by Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten's kitchen was a perfect starter. The breakfast photo of soft scrambled eggs with aged cheddar and broccoli was absolutely mouth-watering. I your breakfast ended with a presentation of Cedric Grolet's Easter Egg. Good time was to be had.

After you daily swim and FT read, you glided into that lovely BWM limo and headed to Mandarin Oriental and with the same driver. I always dreamed of being greeted with champagne upon my arrival at a hotel. So Dynasty, so Alexis Carrington!

There you partake a birthday luncheon of Japanese Wagyu and ended with another sumptuous cake that was out-of-this-world. You even was presented with another Easter bunny before other guests. I say you are a special guest indeed.

The final touch to your birthday week-end was at the venerable Four Seasons where you met up with friends from Qatar and they bear gifts too. It is nice to have friends who care.

Another cake and martinis were presented to which you savor with your friends. Gifts galore was the bag you were given with Four Seasons Logo by none other than Peter, another one in the world. I may have discussed this with mummy. I thought I was the only one. LOL

I am so exhausted reading your birthday celebration as it ends at MO with another cake and perfectly mixed SF martinis. The gifts keep coming with a 90-minutes massage and a special labeled bottle of vermouth was beyond perfection. Of course, another Japanese meal was consumed as always with excellent wait-staff service set off the end of you celebration.

Cheers.
Till next read.

Simon,

This is a true 10-teddies review in every sense. What came through most clearly was how seamlessly each part of the celebration built on the last, with The Emory setting the tone and anchoring the day, and 45 Park Lane, Four Seasons at Park Lane, and Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park each contributing something distinct while maintaining an exceptional and consistent level of luxury throughout.

Your photos were outstanding. They captured the detail, the atmosphere, and the personality of each setting in a way that made it feel immediate. It genuinely felt like we were there with you, moving through each moment and experiencing the same rhythm of the day.

What also stood out was how well the service and personal touches aligned across each property. It is not easy to execute at that level across multiple hotels in a single day, but based on your experience, each team clearly understood the moment and delivered accordingly.

March is always a fabulous time on your blog, and your birthday month posts are consistently some of the most enjoyable of the year. There is always a sense of occasion that comes through, and this was a perfect example of that.

And knowing you, we imagine an SF Martini found its place somewhere along the way, whether it made the write-up or not.

Thank you for sharing such a remarkable celebration.

Nick and Rick

Thanks for writing these brilliant comments on your way back from Dallas. My stay at The Mansion of Turtle Creek there, the first Rosewood Hotel, was overshadowed by my Houston friends not showing up. Also remember that hotel being decorated in dark depressing colours. I am sure it looks very different now.

Dear Simon,

In appreciation of your sublime blog, it's truly aesthetic in value—grand, noble, and frankly awe-inspiring.

I also believe the properties you are patronising enjoy the opportunity to put their hospitality on display. That's a good practice.

Looking forward to more Si Frew journeys.

Yours Aye.

There’s something delightfully Sifrew about this—equal parts whimsy, indulgence, and that knowing wink that luxury, at its best, doesn’t have to take itself too seriously. A ten-teddy birthday unfolding across The Emory, 45 Park Lane, Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane and Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park feels less like an itinerary and more like a perfectly choreographed piece of theatre—plush, playful, and just a touch self-aware.

What stood out most wasn’t simply the settings (though few corners of London do polished grandeur quite like Park Lane and Hyde Park), but the tone: a reminder that luxury experiences are often at their most memorable when they lean into storytelling. There’s a childlike joy here—echoing that sense of occasion where even the smallest details feel ceremonial—which elevates the whole piece beyond a standard hotel round-up.

It also quietly builds on a theme Rick touched on in his earlier post about experiential travel—the idea that who or what you travel with can shape the narrative as much as the destination itself. In this case, ten teddies become both companions and curators, reframing familiar spaces into something closer to a private world. Nick, too, has hinted at this in his reflections on modern luxury: that it’s no longer just about access, but about perspective—the lens through which you experience a place.

And that’s what lingers here. Not just the suites, the service, or even the impeccable addresses—but the sense that luxury, when done well, invites you to play a little. To suspend disbelief. To celebrate, even if the guest of honour happens to be made of fur and stuffing.

Curious to see whether this becomes a recurring Sifrew motif—because if this is how birthdays are being marked, expectations have been set rather wonderfully high.

Oh Simon, you had me googling right away. A snow shower? After our Canadian winter, I was ready to say, no thank you, but saw that it happens after a wonderful Sauna and my Finnish youth immediately 'got it'. Wonderful. And best to have rid yourself of any toxins, because what an event your birthday was!!
Your writing, as always, is enthralling but this post's pictures? Truly magnificent. It is so delightful to see you so happy and being truly appreciated. I am not a sweet fan per se, but the pics of the SiFrew martini had me positively enchanted and thinking, maybe with chocolate cake? LOL.
I'm off to Europe for most of the summer, but maybe catch up in one of your favorite hotels along the way. Even if we can't meet up, I will still order a SiFrew martini and toast your happiness.

Kind of you to praise both my writing & photos. It is interesting you Canadians (ie Sam too) are so obsessed with that snow shower. Four Seasons, Doha’s spa had an ice room.

It would be fun if we meet again during your European adventure. Everyone, who likes martinis, loves the ‘SF Martini’.
