Extreme Weather

A period of record breaking hot weather dominated another busy month. We now may get similar weather next week in London again.

'Exclusive' Soho Mews House

The month started with a dinner with two lawyer friends at the 'invitation only' Soho Mews House. The food and company were exceptional. OK, we drank 'SF Martinis', so the drinks were unbelievable too.

Later in the month I met Nick Jones, the Founder of Soho House.

National Fish & Chip Day at 45 Park Lane & "No Bill for Mr Frew"

I spent Friday 5 June (National Fish & Chip Day 2026) on the outside terrace at 45 Park Lane.

Tempura fried monkfish, triple cooked chips from heaven and the best curry sauce of my life. All made even better by a chat with GM Lee. I ended the afternoon with strawberry & champagne ice lollies and being told there was no bill for www.sifrew.com

The Legendary Breakfast at Pan Pacific, London & Taittinger Champagne

When I declined the offer of champagne at breakfast at Pan Pacific, London, because I intended to swim, I was given a bottle of Taittinger to "drink later".

Samuel Pepys & An Unforgettable Sunday Lunch at Cooper's Cut at Four Seasons at Tower Bridge

I ended a delicious Sunday lunch in their Ho Bryan (private dining) Room. Ho Bryan is the anglicised, historical nickname for Château Haut-Brion. A 350 year old brand and one of the five premier cru wines of Bordeaux.

The diaries of Samuel Pepys in April 1663 mention him drinking Ho Bryan. The walls of the private dining room are decorated with Château Haut-Brion wine bottles and artifacts.

I got to eat my desserts in this room, try cocktails and learn there was "no bill" for any of the later experience.

Cole Porter's Fabulously Glamorous 'High Society' at The Barbican Centre

Felicity Kendal was brilliant as Mother Lord. This week we learnt indomitable Penelope Keith lost her fight with cancer.

With 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire', 'I've Got You Under My Skin', 'Let's Do It (Let's Fall in Love) etc Cole Porter really is songwriter supreme.

Chef Elliott Grover's Oscars Evening at Fortnum & Mason

This was a very special evening. I sat opposite F&M's Events Head Heidi and next to Nigel, who had travelled from Wales that day.

A number of staff from 45 Park Lane helped and the food was exemplary (eg A5 Kagoshima Roast Beef; a Coronation Chicken Scotch Egg; USDA Beef Wellington with shaved black truffles; trifle etc)  and we received a gold sprayed chocolate gift to take home.

Chef Elliott is a natural storyteller and you can see why he is a morning TV celebrity. By the time the dinner ended the store was closed and it was brilliantly surreal making your way down from the 3rd Floor Food & Drink Studio via a darkened empty shop.

'No Bill' for Breakfast at St Clement Hotel & Met Nick Jones

As soon as you enter the  St Clement's lobby you know Nick Jones, Founder of Soho House, has done it again.

Service is flawless and seating so comfortable. When you see Cacklebean Eggs are on the menu, you know this is a quality operation. A hotel that is going to be a huge success.

I was surprised to learn there was no bill for my breakfast and thrilled to find Nick Jones in the lobby and happy to meet me.

It was another '9 teddies'  (🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻) month, despite the extreme heat.  I am sure you will agree the photos below justify another very high score but the window being replaced in my Barbican place, & the detailed letter from Buckingham Palace, would warrant that high score alone.

Chef Elliott Grover's curry sauce was so much better. However, the bag of traditional sweets they gave us to take home were fun (eg aniseed flavoured Black Jack chewy sweets).

Had to try the latest Limited Edition strawberry sandwich. It tastes more like cake, than a sandwich, and is cumbersome to eat. However, it tasted much better than the strawberry & cream one. The chocolate bread is just too thick.

Simon,

What an extraordinary month, particularly with London enduring such intense heat. This post captured the full rhythm of your London life at its best: exceptional hospitality, remarkable food, theater, friends, and those wonderfully unexpected moments that make every week feel like an occasion.

Chef Elliott Grover’s Oscars dinner at Fortnum & Mason sounded especially memorable. The A5 Kagoshima roast beef, Coronation Chicken Scotch Egg, truffled Beef Wellington, and the surreal walk through a darkened Fortnum’s afterward made it feel far more special than a conventional dinner. Chef Elliott clearly has a gift for turning an already exceptional menu into a true event.

We also loved reading about National Fish & Chip Day at 45 Park Lane. Tempura monkfish, triple-cooked chips, that remarkable curry sauce, champagne-and-strawberry ice lollies, and time with Lee sounded like the perfect example of how 45 Park Lane always knows how to make you smile.

The contrast between the Pan Pacific breakfast, Sunday lunch at Cooper’s Cut, and High Society at the Barbican made the month feel especially well rounded. The Ho Bryan room, with its Samuel Pepys connection, sounded like such a fascinating setting in which to end the afternoon. Your photographs brought all of these moments to life so vividly that we truly felt as though we were there with you, from the Barbican to Fortnum’s, 45 Park Lane, and the Four Seasons.

It was also lovely to see time with your friend from Uruguay woven into the month. Those friendships, alongside all of the remarkable London experiences, are what give your posts such warmth and personality.

Meeting Nick Jones at St Clement was another wonderful highlight. Your description of the flawless service, comfortable surroundings, and the quality of the breakfast made it sound like a hotel with a very promising future. Between the SF Martinis, the thoughtful “no bill” moments, and the letter from Buckingham Palace, it was unmistakably a month only Simon could have.

This was a true nine-teddy month, even before taking the remarkable photos into account. Thank you for sharing another lively, personal, and luxurious chapter of London life.

-Nick and Rick

Si, these are some of your best pictures yet - which says something. The lighting behind St Paul’s is particularly exceptional. I’m normally not the biggest fan of fish & chips (except for the peas) but these ones look absolutely fantastic. Regarding Gus not smiling - I don’t smile in pictures either as it makes me look like a frog. We’re smiling inside, though.

What an absolutely splendid evening it was ..well worth the journey up from my home in West Wales on that rather hot day - the food was so delicious - and it was fascinating to be right on top of the kitchen to see it all being so expertly prepared!! And I really did enjoy your company Simon - your memories of life in Bermuda and Qatar were so interesting as were your observations about the present hotel / restaurant scene In London. Cannot say June was not a hot month for you. With record-breaking temperature rising, you kept cool and brave on. Bravo. You started with a dinner with friends over fantastic food and conversation at the Soho Mews House. After a few SF martinis, and other cocktails, I would have been under the table or something. And to boot, you met the founder, Nick Jones. Lucky lad.

I never knew that National Fish & Chips day existed. Have I really been away from England that long. It sounded like heaven when I read of your celebration with Tempura fried monkfish and tripled-fried chips with curry sauce, I have had lust. Then you ended with strawberry and champagne ice lollies was the topper.

The month continues with its hot streak with a visit to the Cooper's Cut at Four Seasons. The Sunday lunch at Ho Bryan was interesting as with the connection with Samuel Pepys.

Then you spent an evening at the Barbican Centre for a glamorous viewing of the current production of Cole Porter
musical of Philadelphia Story was a corker. Seeing the legendary Felicity Kendal in-person as Mother Lord was worth it. It also has Helen George from my favourite series Call the Midwife as Tracy Lord along side as well. All those wonderful Porter's songs so nothing bad can happen ever. So heartbroken to have learnt of the passing of the great Penelope Keith. I fondly remembered her from my childhood of her in Good Neighbors and later To the Manor Born (She was the best in this series).

Love your comparison of the breakfast you had around town. So interesting and riveting. Keep it up.

Cheers.
Ta

Oh Simon, what a feast for the eyes! and writing for the soul. These photos are just stunning and sadly, for someone on a 'diet', so mouthwatering!!

I love that your culinary adventures always treat me to new taste combinations that I never would think to curate myself! I adore curries, but frankly, would never have thought to pair them with 'almost' traditional fish & chips! This combination I can easily reproduce and expect to really enjoy. Courgette (aka 'zuccini' in this hemisphere) is one of the very few vegetables I cannot find a way to enjoy so bravo for you on your adventuresome spirit (never doubted that for a minute!) but the French toast is true inspiration and what my grandsons will receive for breakfast this morning!

I am, sadly, unable to enjoy a glass of champagne -- though I love the taste, for some reason, one glass still gives me a prompt headache -- but I love hearing about the history and seeing the pics of where you can learn/imbibe. And, of course, 'our' beloved SiFrew martini always gives me such fun memories and a yearning for 5 p.m.!!

With my nomadic soul, I am always captivated by your scenic shots, and the shot of the extreme heat & lightening was, especially not being near it, quite breathtaking.

You made the month so intriguing in spite of not including any of your wonderful travel adventures! My own adventures at airports last month made your decision to remain cool at hot spots in London very wise.

As always, though, now that I sit to plan my own autumn adventures, I will enjoy my 'walks' through previous sifrew adventures to assist in this very satisfying chore! But it's still early in Canada, so I think I will delay, pour a Sifrew martini at 5:01 and return to this wonderful source.
