A Mandarin Oriental Celebrity/ VIP Fan #imafan

For the last few weeks I have been living a Mandarin Oriental London dream. From a memorable Heston Blumenthal lunch (those smoked Scottish scallops) with the Acting GM of Mandarin Oriental, Hyde Park Flavia, who I first met when she was GM of Mandarin Oriental, Miami; to Bonfire Night in the Hanover (rooftop) Bar at Mandarin Oriental, Mayfair trying their new cocktail list (The Shepherd's Mark spicy margarita is a must try) while looking at panoramic views & a Christmas party back at Mandarin Oriental, Hyde Park next week with Ruinart champagne, King's Fine Food caviar & live music.

Anyway, this post focuses on my special stay last week at 50 room/ suite Mandarin Oriental, Mayfair, which only opened in June 2024:-

Deceptive Mandarin Oriental, Mayfair

The non-distinct exterior of the hotel makes it a surprise when you come through the doors and see the glamorous staircase down to the vast restaurant atrium filled with light from the large skylight.

Excitement That I Had Arrived

There is no imposing lobby but lots of green marble & from the doorman, to the concierge desk, to reception, I was welcomed by name with big smiles and a genuine feeling of warmth & excitement that I had arrived.

A Welcome With Asian Touches

A cold towel & ginger welcome drink was a nice touch of Asia and Manager Helmut and Kate (Director of Marketing & Communications) both came separately to welcome me personally.

An Exquisite Suite with Hand-Painted Wallpaper

My suite was more compact than I experienced during my stays in the other new luxury hotels in London but was beautiful and quiet with a Toto (Japanese) toilet and a vast bed. There was also a large bath & shower.

Vivienne Westwood; A 'Free' Mini Bar & Mead

There was a chocolate fan that was scrumptious; fresh flowers; a bottle of Moet champagne chilling; a Vivienne Westwood silk scarf; a bottle of the scent of the hotel; a basket of exotic fruit; and a 'free' mini bar.

The mini bar included more champagne, wine spirits and snacks. I would have like some crisps/ potato chips & sweets/ candy to be part of it too & more Mandarin Oriental, Mayfair branding on the snacks.

However, a bottle Mandarin Oriental, Mayfair branded mead (honey wine), that is already on my legendary coffee table in The Barbican, & the exotic fruits basket, made up for this.

Spa & Wellness: A Dazzling Pool & A Massage That Removed Tension

Hope my photos give a good idea of how impressive the hotel's 25 meter pool is. It was also at a perfect temperature and great for swimming in. I had it to myself. There is a steam room, sauna, gym and hot pools with water jets.

My hour long massage from Yuri (she had recently arrived from Japan) really helped to make me feel relaxed & relieved stress. It was such fun talking to her about Tokyo and Kyoto after.

A Legendary Korean Inspired Chef's Table Dinner in Somssi by Jihun Kim

I cannot say enough good things about dinner that evening. Loved that, as well as the menu, with my name in Korean, each course came with a card explaining the components of the dish.

Heavenly Dishes Perfectly Presented

The best wild sea bass of my life; caviar; ganjang lobster; shimmering galbi Wagyu beef; Korean BBQ sauce; kimchi; a bibimbap rice dish from heaven etc

The final mandarin dessert was so light & refreshing. All the food was fresh, seasonal and full of flavour and there was such attention to detail.

Fascinating Sommelier Andres

All the staff were brilliant but the detailed descriptions from Sommelier Andres really added to the special experience.

Must added that the other Chef's Table customers that evening were brilliant too.

An 'SF Martini' in The Hanover (Rooftop) Bar

It was a perfect end to an unforgettable evening drinking an 'SF Martini' in the rooftop bar with Chef Jihun Maxime Kim coming to check on me.

In the photo of the table Greta wears Christian Lacroix and Issy the Vivienne Westwood silk scarf handmade from material left over from previous collections.

Issy is only looking after it until I can give it to my niece Maria. She is based in Moscow but I hope to see her in Shrewsbury next year again.

Phenomenal Natura Bisse Products

All the bathroom products were Natura Bisse and the bed turndown service left Natura Bisse Diamond Cocoon Sheer Eye. I already love this hydrating/ firming product.

Slept So Well & Woke Brilliantly Rested

I got an excellent night's sleep in the quiet suite with a huge comfortable bed and luxury bed linen. The 500 thread Egyptian cotton feels silky.

An Exceptional Room Service Breakfast

Every aspect of my room service breakfast was outstanding. Even my soft scrambled eggs were perfect and the pancakes so fluffy & light.

A 'Final' Swim & Then a Group Photo With Staff

My swim the next day was just as good (it was my 'private pool' again)  and I had been told I could use my suite until 4pm.

I was so pleased GM Hemal, Manager Helmut, Chef Jihun Maxime Kim & Eray (Director of Residences) were amongst the staff in the photo before I left. They were all a big part in the exceptional score Mandarin Oriental, Mayfair achieved for my stay. Kate missed it but we had a photo when I arrived and she knows how much I appreciated her help organising my dinner, massage etc

Mandarin Oriental, Mayfair rates an '8 teddies'    (🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻) score. The compact nature of my suite, & lack of personalised pillowcases & robes, was more than compensated for by Chef Jihun Maxime Kim's exceptional Chef's Table dinner, with paired drinks.

Must thank GM Hemal & Manager Helmut for making this stay possible, at a very busy time for year for the hotel & for Hemal personally replying to my emails during my stay.

Tips: go for the Chef's Table dinner and opt for the paired drinks. You will not regret it & you must swim in their pool.

Simon --

We loved reading this. Your photos from Mandarin Oriental, Mayfair bring your entire stay to life exactly the way you described it. The contrast between the “non-distinct exterior” and the glamorous staircase leading down to the “vast restaurant atrium filled with light” is captured so well. We felt as though we were arriving with you.

The suite looked beautiful and serene, just as you wrote — compact but quiet, with the Toto toilet, the vast bed, and that large bath and shower. The way you photographed the welcome amenities, from the chocolate fan to the Vivienne Westwood silk scarf to the Mandarin Oriental, Mayfair mead, gave such a clear sense of the thoughtful touches you mentioned.

Your Chef’s Table dinner at Somssi looked incredible. Seeing the dishes you described — the wild sea bass, the ganjang lobster, the galbi Wagyu beef, the bibimbap, and the final mandarin dessert — made your written impressions even more vivid. The detail of each course arriving with a card explaining the components was wonderful to see.

The pool truly looked as dazzling as you said, and the peaceful atmosphere you described definitely came through in your photos. It was easy to imagine why you enjoyed having it entirely to yourself.

And of course, we smiled seeing the “SF Martini” in The Hanover Bar. You know how much we love that drink, and we cannot wait to enjoy one with you in London — venue completely your choice.

This was such a joyful, beautifully documented post, and your “8 teddies” score feels fully reflected in every detail you shared.

I feel privileged as I see previews of posts like this as they’re happening, but still oh my, oh my… EIGHT teddies!! ☺️ Pool looks stunning, and I bet you every single one of those bears would love a dip in it too!
As an industry pro, I love the bedroom detail, the border on the Oxford pillowcases, and matching tone of toiletries… 😍😍😍
Keep us all posted with your adventures. X

A hotelier like you saying this means so much to me. We can celebrate together at the 45 Park Lane Christmas tree party next week. Magnums of Ruinart champagne, caviar, truffles and a chocolate fountain.

Thank you for another captivating post about your stay at Mandarin Oriental, Mayfair. Reading your November 2025 review really transports the reader into the heart of the experience — from the intimate welcome to the quiet elegance of the suite, to that unforgettable chef’s-table dinner with Chef Jihun Maxime Kim.

It’s also wonderful to see how your impressions continue to echo what Rick and Nick have been saying in their earlier comments. Back when the hotel first opened, they remarked that the new MO “looked beyond stunning,” and in your pre-November write-up they admitted you were making them “want to plan a trip to London right now” because the anticipation sounded like “a teddy-scale record breaker.”

Your latest review more than validates their (and your) enthusiasm; everything you praised in advance seems to have come to life in the most vivid way.

A few things really struck me:

1. Warm, Personal Service

You describe being welcomed “by name with big smiles and a genuine feeling of warmth.” That kind of hospitality goes a long way, especially in a city hotel. Mandarin Oriental Mayfair seems to have struck a lovely balance: boutique and discreet, but with a staff that cares. It’s exactly the sort of service you, Rick and Nick often highlight in their comments — personal, sincere, and never overbearing.

⸻

2. Chef Jihun Maxime Kim’s Culinary Vision

The way you talk about the Somssi dining experience is particularly compelling. Wild sea bass, ganjang lobster, wagyu with Korean BBQ — and then a light mandarin dessert to finish. The fact that each course came with a card bearing your name in Korean is such a thoughtful touch. It elevates the dinner beyond just food; it becomes a narrative, a personal connection. No wonder Rick and Nick said you make them want to book a trip — meals like this are the kind people travel for.

⸻

3. Wellness & Quiet Luxury

Your description of the spa, the 25 m pool, and the massage with Yuri conveys a tranquillity that seems rare in central London. And that suite — compact but beautifully designed, with hand-painted wallpaper and a Toto toilet — sounds like the perfect retreat. Again, this lines up beautifully with Rick and Nick’s earlier excitement about how “stunning” the whole property looked from the beginning.

⸻

4. Rooftop Finale

Ending the evening with an “SF Martini” in the rooftop Hanover Bar, with Chef Kim personally checking in, really gives the stay a sense of exclusivity and personal touch.

It’s exactly the kind of elevated but intimate experience that has made me, Rick and Nick and so many others around the world such long-time fans of your teddy reviews

John --

Thank you for such a thoughtful and well-written comment. We really enjoyed reading it. You captured Simon’s experience so beautifully, and it reminded us why we’ve always loved his reviews.

Simon’s posts have inspired us for years, and this one was no different. His details, his practical tips, and those photos — especially the ones from Mandarin Oriental, Mayfair — made it incredibly easy to imagine being there. Even from this side of the Atlantic, we felt like we could picture the atrium, the suite, and that SF Martini at the Hanover Bar.

Your reflections on the service, the spa, and Chef Jihun Maxime Kim’s dinner added so much to the conversation. We always appreciate how Simon brings these moments to life, and it’s lovely when friends like you agree that it truly deserved an 8-teddy rating.

Rick & Nick --

Thank you both for such incredibly kind words. It means a great deal that the comment resonated with you. Simon has a remarkable talent for capturing the spirit of a place — not just the design and amenities, but the feeling behind the experience — and it’s always a pleasure to reflect on that with others who appreciate his work just as much.

The Mandarin Oriental, Mayfair truly shines through his storytelling: the thoughtful service, the elegance of the spaces, and, of course, moments like that unforgettable SF Martini at the Hanover Bar. Chef Jihun Maxime Kim’s dinner was another highlight that deserved to be celebrated, and I’m delighted you felt the same.

It’s wonderful to share these impressions with fellow admirers of Simon’s reviews. Thank you again for taking the time to write such a warm and generous response.

We always enjoy your perspective, and it’s great to share these moments with someone who appreciates Simon’s reviews as much as we do. He really does have a way of bringing a place to life — the details, the mood, the little touches — and this stay at MO Mayfair was a perfect example.

The way you described the service, the atmosphere, and that SF Martini captured it all so well. And we completely agree about Chef Jihun Maxime Kim’s dinner — it deserved every bit of attention.

Really glad we could all share in this one.

Simon, your magical stay at Mayfair MO has arrived in style as I always expected. The hotel sounds so quaint and nondescript that one would hardly knows that it is MO. But as you described your lofty entrance through the doors then you get the scope of the magnificent staircase that cascade down to the restaurant atrium with lights illuminating from a large skylight. I can imagine the sheer beauty of that sight.

It is nice to know that there is no imposing lobby to instill superiority, but lots of soothing green marble to greet guests. The courtesy from the doormen, Concierge desk, to reception was filled with genuine warmth and welcoming smiles.

What a welcome to start with a cold tower and a ginger drink is pure luxe. I gather the suites are a wee bit compact, but the view and tranquility was worth it. I adored that you had a vast bed, and large bath and shower, for me, it was the Japanese Toto toilet that won my heart.

The welcomer continued with chocolate, fresh flowers, Moet champagne chilled to perfection; a Vivienne Westwood silk scarf (Vivienne Westwood is/was my kryptonite); a bottle of signature hotel scent, fruit basket; and the topper for me was the "free mini-bar". I am in.

The spa and massage sounded so exquisite and what a lovely way to decompress from the world outside. Then a sumptuous dinner with such service accompanied with each course describing the components. The menu of course had the Simon in Korean to make it more unique from starters to dessert. Then it ended at the rooftop bar with a SF martini. I loved that Greta was wearing Lacroix and Issy wore cast-off Westwood's silk scarf. Does Issy knows he's wearing last season's stock? 😂

I am so glad that you slept so well and felt rested to face the cruel world outside behind those inviting doors. The perfection of the breakfast was I always loved reading about your stays anywhere. My idea of heaven is perfected fluffy scrambled eggs and pancakes.

Can't wait for what's up in December as the Christmas is approaching.

Ta! Cheeers.
