The New Claridge's Bakery

I was one of the first people to experience the new Claridge's bakery and had the honour of meeting legendary baker Richard Hart. He had just flown in from Mexico City (where his Green Rhino bakery is based) and he also has a joint venture bakery in Copenhagen with one of the founder of Noma.

All his flavoursome breads (with crisp crusts that will not break your teeth) are made with sourdough and, of his treats, I can particularly recommend his lardy cakes,  the chocolate French Fancy & Walnut Whip.

My Best Burns Night Ever!

I spent Burns Night 2026 in the Rooftop Bar & Cigar Lounge at The Emory.

My First Cigar Since The Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski in Havana, Cuba in 2018

We started with whisky cocktails, caviar topped canapés & a brilliant bagpipe player in the Cigar Lounge. It was good to see Manager Blue again and he persuaded me to have a few puffs of a cigar before dinner.

A Table Decorated With Heather; Stunning Views of London; Exceptional Drams of The Macallan; The 1786 'Address to a Haggis' etc

A four course dinner (including Cullen Skink  soup) was made even better by Felicity (The Macallan's Brand Ambassador) giving history & context to the drams we were savouring & sitting next to Charlie from the Maybourne Social Media Team talking about Jamaica etc

The piping in of the haggis made my chest fill with pride for my Scottish heritage.

The Macallan M 2023 For A Larger-Than-Life Character, With An Infectious Laugh & Ceaseless Good Humour

I ended an unforgettable evening toasting my late Scottish father with The Macallan M 2023 release in a Lalique bottle. An exceptional whisky for extraordinary husband, brother, father, grandfather, friend & man.

House of Maybourne Perfection

Must admit I also tried a few more puffs of a second cigar and The Emory's brilliant staff got me a vodka martini. As I was leaving, they had the Weekend Financial Times, & New York Times, for me to take home.

It was another '8 teddies'  (🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻) period. Yesterday's 'Sunday Roast' at The Grill at The Connaught was unbelievable (eg the extra slice of their melt in the mouth roast beef). I have now changed my Social Media profiles to include working with House of Maybourne & booked a second stay at The Emory, as part of my 29 March 2026 birthday.

Must also mentioned being privileged to be given a exclusive chance to view Lara Julian's new artwork at The Conduit Private Member Club; the 'We Three Kings' carol sung as part of Shrewsbury School's Epiphany Service at St Mary le Strand;

'Holocaust Memorial Day' at Soho House with author Wendy Holden telling us the inspirational & uplifting story of Fredy Hirsch. Emotional & harrowing but we must not forget.

There were also flawless breakfasts at Four Seasons at Park Lane & Mandarin Oriental, Mayfair. At Four Seasons I met Olga, from the bar at Four Seasons, Manhattan, again. In an interview I gave in 2021 I named her the most memorable bartender I have met and chatting together over breakfast was a real dream come true. When Four Seasons, Manhattan closed for a period, I was worried we would never meet again.

When I heard the bagpipes on Burns Night, thought about dad’s funeral. He was such an extraordinary guy. So glad I helped Donald write dad’s obituary for the Vet Record. Was even more proud of him after that.

Lovely to hear from you and see the wonderful places you visit, the people you meet and the beautiful food and beverage that you are treated to.

Do hope Mum is keeping well and is still happy. I have not spoken to her recently as I am not sure she recognises me. The main thing she is happy and safe.

Thanks for thinking of me and good luck for more feasting in the highest places.

Regards

Donald

We do love a good Macallan! I still haven’t tried haggis but with enough Macallan even that should work! Im glad you enjoyed another few great events.

Shocked you have not tried haggis! With neeps (turnips/ swede) & tatties (mashed potatoes) delicious and, at Burns Night at The Emory, a The Macallan whisky sauce.

Kind of you to say all this. It was such a special Sunday afternoon in The Grill at The Connaught. Eating alone & listening to other customers talk about how bad the Dior experience on the Oriental Express was, was almost as fascinating as dinner with Roland Fasel in The Grill. I am never bored at The Connaught.

Simon,

This was an extraordinary post and a wonderful reflection of what a Maybourne life looks like at its very best. The way you moved between craftsmanship, hospitality, and deeply personal moments made this a particularly compelling read.

Your experience at the new Claridge’s bakery sounded fantastic. Meeting Richard Hart and tasting his breads and pastries at the very beginning of that chapter felt like a privilege in itself. You have a great eye for recognizing true artisans, and your descriptions made it clear why this bakery will quickly become something special within Claridge’s.

Burns Night at The Emory sounded unforgettable. From the setting in the Rooftop Bar and Cigar Lounge to the whisky, the caviar, the piping, and the sense of occasion, it was all beautifully conveyed. The pairing with The Macallan, and the way Felicity brought history and context to the drams, captured exactly how a great whisky experience should be presented.

Your toast to your late father with The Macallan M 2023 was especially meaningful. That moment stood out not because of the rarity of the whisky, but because of the pride, heritage, and remembrance you attached to it. It gave the entire evening a depth that went far beyond the dinner itself.

The Sunday roast at The Grill at The Connaught, the thoughtful touches from The Emory team, and the overall rhythm of these weeks all reinforced why this clearly earned its 8-teddies distinction. You consistently show that great hotels, food, and service are really about how they make people feel.

This post was a pleasure to read from start to finish.

What a beautiful read — thanks for sharing this, Simon! 👏

Your experiences from Claridge’s Bakery to Burns Night at The Emory and The Grill at The Connaught truly capture not just luxury hospitality at its best, but the way exceptional places and moments can become deeply personal memories. The way you describe meeting Richard Hart and enjoying his incredible sourdough breads and pastries gives a real sense of how special that first chapter of Claridge’s bakery really was — and it nicely mirrors how London’s history and present-day craftsmanship can come together in one bite.

The Burns Night section was especially poignant. The bagpipes, the drams of The Macallan M 2023, and that toast to your late Scottish father were beautifully written — it was easy to feel the pride, heritage, and emotion in that moment. I know Sandy would have been so proud of you being there and celebrating in such a meaningful way.

And your description of the Sunday roast at The Grill at The Connaught was spot-on — rich, thoughtful, and evocative of what makes great service and food so memorable. It’s clear why this earned such an “8-teddies” (🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻) mark!

Looking forward to your next set of adventures — and toasting your father with you when I’m back in London 🥃

Have just read all the messages about Burns night . I am unable to believe that someone has not tasted the Haggis especially with the whiskey !
Sandy introduced me to that when he and Margaret first were together. Your father had such an infectious laugh and so we always knew when he and Marg were around .
As for Sandy and his work he was second to none and he could deal with large and small animals and was so clever that when he decided to retire I remember lots of people who we knew didn’t know what to do as no one could bear to go to anyone else .
Margaret missed him so much we often spoke about him and you two “boys”! Also chatted about where they went to meet you .
I must say that you really do have a lovely life but you must have earned it as Marg said . Keep it up.
Love Marjorie

The Burns Night at The Emory sounds utterly unforgettable—bagpipes, fine drams, and that swell of Scottish pride is beautifully captured.
