In Icon Klub bar in Laos I was told I am a 'flashpacker'. I looked up the definition of this while in the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi & have just been considering it during my 16 hour train journey, on a soft bed in an air conditioned compartment, travelling from Hanoi to Hoi An.
I do now just travel with a Merrill Lynch knapsack and Dorchester & Four Seasons Hong Kong carrier bags. Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental & Raffles staff have all asked where the rest of my luggage is.
On the last journey I bonded with a Vietnamese family and shared breakfast with them in our compartment. Maybe I am a 'flashpacker'?
