45 Park Lane; Peninsula, London; The Emory & Unbelievable Friends, a Birthday Beyond Compare - London - March 2025

31/3/2025

Just booked Easter in Shrewsbury with mum. She loves this time of year.

A Birthday Surrounded by Love

Gus from Uruguay, & his sister Laura, celebrating my birthday with me would have been special anyway but going to The Royal Opera House to watch a George Balanchine ballet, drinking Veuve Clicquot champagne in the interval, was better than anything.

Our friend Johan treating us all to dinners (including Yauatcha & The Wolseley) was so kind & generous. We all drank 'SF Martinis' in The Wolseley, and ate my birthday cake from 45 Park Lane, on the evening of Gus & my birthdays. Complete perfection.

My 'Birthday Eve', Almost Better Than My Birthday

The day before my birthday started at Mandarin Oriental, Hyde Park with balloons, complimentary champagne, an extra portion of dim sum and my 'usual' table watching the Household Cavalry ride past, while talking to Pim about the earthquake in Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand.

Outside Mandarin Oriental, Hyde Park the Peninsula, London's vintage Rolls-Royce was waiting for me.

Peninsula, London Keep Exceeded My Expectations

At Peninsula, London MD Rolf, Manager Scott and the Peninsula, London teddy bear were waiting to greet me. Rolf told me the vintage Rolls-Royce took 5 years to refurbish to Peninsula's standards.

Up in Concorde/ Rolls-Royce themed 'Brooklands Bar' 'The Si Frew' cocktail had been created in my honour and was refreshingly delicious.

While I was in the bar Chef Francesco Dibenedetto came to chat again and later presented me with a bottle of olive oil from his parents' place in Italy. I was overwhelmed by this, and two bottles of the 'The Si Frew' cocktail with special Peninsula labels.

The Royal Opera House

It was 30 years since I last saw a ballet at The Royal Opera House. The evening was a surreal experience made even better by sitting next to Laura.

Another Si Frew Birthday

The actual day of my birthday started with breakfast at Four Seasons, London at Park Lane and hugs from their staff.

There were no balloons this year, or complimentary champagne, but Emma from Qatar joining me for a champagne breakfast more than made up for this, and the reduced birthday cake.

My gift was a Four Seasons pillow case personalised with my initials. Love this & it is already on my Dorchester hotel bed here in The Barbican. My Barbican bedroom currently smells like 45 Park Lane, thanks to one of their birthday gifts.

45 Park Lane Keep Blowing My Mind

Nothing about my birthday lunch at 45 Park Lane could have been any better.

A balloon on a golden thread; the 'SF Martini' being on another Wolfgang Puck cocktail list with beautiful wording; Chef Elliott Grover's mind-blowing good Wagyu steaks; another impressive (& delicious) birthday cake and Emily, Veronica and all the staff making me feel like a VVVIP.

Gifts including Ruinart champagne, and then being told my bill had been covered was just too much.

A Deep Tissue Adaptogenic Massage & Snow Shower at Surrenne at 'The Emory'

In the afternoon was my complimentary spa experience at The Emory, thanks to Roland Fasel at Maybourne Hotels.

Before the massage I tried the pool and snow shower. My massage involved infrared and music therapy. It was so relaxing, special and perfect.

I left my iPhone charging cable in the Surrenne spa. One of the concierges at Four Seasons, London at Park Lane went to retrieve this, while I was at dinner at The Wolseley. Four Seasons service at its best.

After Dinner at The Wolseley Drinks at Four Seasons, London at Park Lane

After dinner we returned to Four Seasons, London at Park Lane. I had left my gifts there &, as I said, their concierges were retrieving my charging cable.

We decided to have some last drinks and separate birthday cakes were produced for Gus & me. Peter did not charge me for my 'last SF Martini', which was a very kind gesture at the end of a perfect birthday day & helped to made up for the lack of complimentary champagne that morning.

Breakfast at Raffles, London at The OWO

The last of my birthday celebrations had to be at Raffles, London at The OWO. MD Philippe, and Manager Patrick, are both leaving in June 2025 but they have been so kind and generous to me and Philippe will become CEO of Dorchester Collection, including 45 Park Lane.

It was also UK Mothering Sunday and so I rang my mum and she had received my card with the photo of her I love on it.

I was so pleased Natalia was running breakfast again but sad to hear 'La Dame de Pic', the Anne-Sophie Pic restaurant at Four Seasons, Tower Bridge has closed down.

A birthday that rates 9 cover photos is clearly an '8 teddies' (🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻) one. 45 Park Lane; Peninsula, London & The Emory all went way beyond the call of duty. My TWA Hotel bag now also sports a Peninsula luggage tag.

Four Seasons, Doha - The 'Epic Trip' Had To End Here - Doha, Qatar - November 2024

1/1/2025

The 'Epic 6 Week Trip'

After 6 flights & 5 countries the 14th, and last, hotel on the 'Epic Trip' had to be Four Seasons, Doha.

This was the 7th Four Seasons on the trip & visiting Four Seasons Resort & Residences at The Pearl Qatar, on my last full day, took the total of Four Seasons visited to 8.

A Red Carpet Welcome & A Tranquil Suite

A friendly and cheerful red carpet welcome was waiting for me.

The suite I had been allocated had incredible views of the beach & Nobu, Doha and was in beautiful pale colours & had a huge shower.

I loved the mock up of 'FS Doha News' but was surprised there was no champagne. There was a bottle of Veuve Clicquot champagne when I stayed in 2022.

Friday Brunch in Curiosa by Jean-Georges

My trip was perfectly timed with Sunday brunch in Bangkok, Saturday brunch in Dubai and now Friday brunch in Doha.

My welcome drink at 'Curiosa by Jean-Georges' was a 'Lychee Passion Martini' (vodka, orange liqueur & Veuve Clicquot champagne) with & gummy bears.

The friends I met for brunch are some of the best friends I have in the world, the live music was brilliant and the food excellent. Brunch could not have been any better.

The Library Lounge & The 'Epic Trip Martini Challenge'

The black pepper & olive oil gin martini entered was the antithesis of what I like and so I decided it was ineligible for the challenge. However, sitting at the bar with one of my best friends was a dream come true.

The Pool Where Frozen Grapes Were Served And Your Sunglasses Cleaned

My lunches by the pool were delicious, & I appreciated The Weekend Financial Times & Wall Street Journal being printed off for me, but some of the touches that made this pool special have been lost over the years.

Nobu, Doha & Four Seasons Resort & Residences at The Pearl Qatar

I had a bit of a disaster with my transport to Nobu, Doha but this was more than made up for PR Director Clara's tour of Four Seasons Resort & Residences at The Pearl Qatar.

Stunning residences and restaurants I want to try. Thanks to GM Mehdi for arranging this at short notice and GM Shadi at Four Seasons, Doha for arranging a Series 7 BMW.

Elements Reopened For My Last Day: Memories of My Almost 10 Years Living & Working in Doha

I was thrilled 'Elements' reopened for breakfast on my last morning. Have so many happy memories made in that room.

Also loved having coffee with one of my former Qatari colleagues from the QFC Regulatory Authority.

Four Seasons, Doha has a very special place in my heart but the lack of a bottle of champagne at my last hotel on my 'Epic Trip' is inexcusable. This, combined with the reduction in the pool service. has to rate a '7 teddies' (🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻) score. Tips: get transport for Nobu, Doha from the front of the hotel & do not expect your suite access card to open gates by the water.

Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach - A 'First Customer' Returns Again & Another Four Seasons That Keeps Getting Better - Dubai, the UAE - November 2024

31/12/2024

A 'First Customer' Returns

Impossible to visit Dubai without returning to Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach. It is another Four Seasons I stayed at before it was open to the public. In fact, their alcohol licence had not been issued when I first stayed.

The Maybach; A 'Red Carpet' Welcome; Jeff Leatham's Floral Installation & Veuve Clicquot Champagne

Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach sent their Maybach to collect me from The Lana, Dubai and there was a red carpet welcome waiting for me.

I was thrilled to be able to see Jeff Leatham's 'A Legacy in Bloom' to celebrate 10 years since this Four Seasons opened. I adore his work at the Four Seasons George V in Paris.

Francesco (Director of Rooms) and I had not met before but he is such a joy to chat with. After a few glasses of Veuve Clicquot champagne, my name was embroidered on my napkin, it was time to go and I was then overwhelmed by gifts (eg a Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach baseball cap with my 'SGF' initials on the side; the Four Seasons coffee table book inscribed with beautiful comments from staff; the updated Zaki soft toy falcon etc).

Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach keeps getting better & my visit must rate an '8 teddies' (🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻) score. I was on 'cloud nine' on the Maybach journey back to The Lana, Dubai. So proud to be  the ''First Customer' of such an impressive hotel.

Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, a Legendary Hotel Gets Even Better. The Captain Andersen Suite; Veuve Clicquot Champagne; Gaggan's New Venue; Peninsula Champagne with the MD of Peninsula, Bangkok & Lunch with Kenny Ng - Bangkok, Thailand - October 2024

Etihad Airways Business Class

I flew from Amman, Jordan to Bangkok in Etihad Airways Business Class via Abu Dhabi.

While I cannot say enough good things about the new Business Class Lounge in Abu Dhabi, the Business Class product in the air was disappointing.

A large chunk of plastic in my breakfast on the first flight, premixed cocktails on the second flight were too sweet; poor choice of film/ TV programmes and Armani/ Casa pillows & blankets had an unpleasantly synthetic feel. The Qatar Airways Qsuite product is far superior.

Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok. A Bangkok Legend & One of the World's Best Hotels

From my greeting at the airport, to my white liveried driver & the lemongrass scented cold towels in the Series 7 BMW, I quickly remembered why I love & admire this historic hotel so much.

The Elegant Captain Andersen Suite

I spent my 5 night stay in The Captain Andersen Suite. Hans Niels Andersen created the building that opened as the Oriental Hotel in 1887.

The refurbishment of Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok meant even the guest bathroom in my suite had a Toto Japanese toilet. The carpet in the bedroom of suite evidenced the extraordinary quality of the materials used in the refurbishment. My only issue was most of one wall in the bedroom being a mirror but maybe it will encourage me to drop some weight.

An Iconic Pool

The hotel's green & gold pool is one of my favourite hotel pools. Jeffrey, who leads the pool staff team, came to hold my hand on my first morning. I felt emotional and all this confirmed to me that this is a remarkable hotel and I am far from an ordinary customer.

Mayuree, Director of Guest Relations, & I have had so many poignant conversations by that pool over the last 10 years.

An Astonishing Stay

From my one-on-one meeting with GM Anthony; to witnessing Her Majesty the Queen of Thailand visiting Her Majesty the Queen of Malaysia at the hotel; to my fascinating chat with Florian, Director of Rooms; to Chef Gaggan Anand's mind-blowing 22 course immersive food, light & sound show; to fireworks during my dinner at 'Blue by Alain Ducasse' in 'Icon Siam'; to meeting charming Peninsula, Bangkok MD Masahisa; to spending time with Sean from Lotus Arts de Vivre in The Bamboo Bar; to Kenny Ng taking me out to lunch, there were too many unbelievable highs on this stay.

With us losing two more guys from my year at Shrewsbury School to heart attacks this year, I was glad to meet with Charlie Thomson in Dubai and help Rob Clover with his move to Qatar too on my 'Epic Trip'.

I am sure the photos below will evidence why Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok is one of the best hotels in the world and also convince you it rates another unprecedented  '8 teddies' (🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻) score, despite some MO profile issues. My post about my 2018 stay explained I did not want Perrier water in my suite or cumbersome cribs. Perrier water was also an issue during my Chinese New Year stay at the Hong Kong Mandarin Oriental & became a point of humour during my stay at the Mandarin Oriental Ritz in Madrid. Providing Veuve Clicquot champagne & tubes of bath products that can be taken away mitigated these issues. Tips: order a room service breakfast during your stay. Treasure my 'RS MOBKK'  gift Chao; use the hotel's drivers & asked the butler service to repair items & bubble wrap items for travel. I guarantee you will be impressed.

Mandarin Oriental, New York - One of the World's Great Hotels - New York, USA - January 2024

8/2/2024

We spent 8 nights staying at Mandarin Oriental, New York. This speaks volumes  regarding my high regard for this iconic Manhattan hotel that I have been staying  in for more than 20 years.

Astonishing Staff

From Lucas at the pool; to Polat & Alex in the MO Lounge, all the staff at Mandarin Oriental, New York kept astonishing me.

Mind-Blowing Concierges

The fact Mandarin Oriental, New York's concierges could get me a reservation at The Blue Box Cafe by Daniel Boulud at Tiffany & Co, at the last minute, dumbfounded me.

Unforgettable Memories

I was so glad I ended my unbelievable trip at this very special hotel. The teddy cake tasted even better than it looked, light and creamy, and drinking Veuve Clicquot champagne in my suite, looking out at the  awe-inspiring views, with my best friend in New York was magical.

Exceptional Suite 5016

Miss those astonishing views from my corner suite on the 50th floor and its Japanese toilet but have Diptyque bath products, Issy's framed outfit & Issy's elegant new outfit to help me remember it all.

Restaurants. Avoid; Must Do & Do on a Different Evening

Bad Roman - giving us 'free' Perrier-Jouet champagne did not make up for the long wait for our table, in an overcrowded area. The garlic babka (bread) and innovative lemon cheesecake were outstanding but rest of our food uninspiring. My recommendation is to ignore the hype & avoid Bad Roman.

The Bazaar by Jose Andres - we were shocked by quite how good the food was here. How does this Chef have time to produce cotton candy/ candy floss, & pork, this mouthwatering, while helping in earthquake & war zones? The Bazaar by Jose Andres at The Ritz-Carlton, New York, NoMad is a must visit.

The Peak - on my last evening we were on the 101st floor. A foggy evening meant there was no view for most of the meal. However, front of house Michael, waitress Marie and the complimentary 'Creamy Farro' we were given made it a perfect experience, despite all this. Be aware there may not be a view at The Peak at Hudson Yard.

I have tried to keep this write-up brief. When you meet me, feel free to ask about aspects & photos that are not explained.

This really was a 'Trip of a Lifetime' and Mandarin Oriental, New York rated '7 teddies' (🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻) and was everything I had hoped for. Tip: order the Chinese Egg Noodle Soup (with chicken & shrimp wontons, char-siu pork, eggs etc) from room service at least once during your stay. When it arrives, talk to the room service staff, they will brighten up your day.

Picture
Despite having only just got back from Beverly Hills, GM Marcel met me. I felt I bonded with him as soon as we met. We had a very fun lunch, while I ate soup dumplings.
Picture
Breakfast on my last day. What a view and Issy's framed outfit is in the background.
Picture
Andres (Director of Guest Relations) and Anthony (Director of Rooms) were waiting to greet me. Manager Jeroen was away when I arrived but came to speak to me at breakfast, once back.

Charismatic GM Thomas Carreras & Four Seasons, New York, Downtown - New York, USA - January 2024

7/2/2024

PictureOn this trip I not only met Thomas but had the honour of meeting Russky too.
Although I decided to stay in Manhattan on this trip, I had to see GM Thomas Carreras at Four Seasons, New York, Downtown.

I was so glad I made this trip. Chatting to the front desk staff, while waiting, reminded me of the quality of this hotel.

Veuve Clicquot Champagne & Wolfgang Puck Food

The bar was very busy but a special table had been reserved for us and we drank Veuve Clicquot champagne and snacked on Wolfgang Puck food, while chatting. We both agreed Chef Elliott Grover at 45 Park Lane is a rising star.

Simon Casson came up in conversation and the next day his new role as CEO of Corinthia Hotels was announced.

Meeting Thomas would always be a '7 teddies' (🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻)  experience but drinking Veuve Clicquot with him, with Russky with us, was even more special.

Houston, Nashville, Memphis & Miami - An Unbelievable Trip! - July 2023

7/8/2023

With everyone asking me about my first foreign trip since my father's death last year, I must post something. On Social Media I have been accused of operating 'fake accounts' since I got back and, at times on this trip, I found it difficult to believe what was happening myself.

The trip started in the BA Concorde Lounge, before a 10 hour British Airways First Class flight to Houston. My friends in Houston managed to hold a beautiful cocktail party in my honour, despite 113°f  temperatures.

I started my time in Nashville with a 'Boy George & Culture Club' concert. 'Berlin' were the support band & 65-year-old Terri Nunn stood of a chair very close to me to sing their last song.

At Four Seasons, Nashville I found out we had lost my relative Ann Clwyd, who loved the Kurds & mineworkers,  when no one else did. Tony Blair put out a beautiful statement about her.

At that Four Seasons I was given a Veuve Clicquot experience where I drank La Grande Dame with Eliza. Her dad (Norbert Putnam) played bass guitar on 120 of Elvis' tracks and was in the support band for the Beatles when they first played in the US.

The food scene in Nasville is insane. I had one of the best meals of my life at 'Locust' and the gourmet fast food at 'Joyland' blew my mind too.

At that Four Seasons  I also learnt Simon Casson had stepped down as a President of Four Seasons (he, kindly, emailed me). With Christian Clerc having left  too, the phrase "to lose one President may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose two looks like carelessness" sprang to my mind.  However, exceptional young staff like Brian on the bar, & Meagan by the pool, give me hope for the future of Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts.

At The Guest House at Graceland Greg & TC gave me a Vernon & Gladys' suite, based on Elvis' Palm Springs home and Elvis whisky & wine. Sitting at Bonnie and Robert's bar there was engrossing listening, & talking to, such a fascinating range of Elvis fans.

My Ultimate VIP Tour of Graceland was another dream come true.

At The Peabody Hotel in Memphis I was given their Presidential Suite, where Presidents Reagan, two Bushes & Clinton have stayed, as well as Michael Jackson. They also made me an Honorary Duckmaster, during the ceremony for this I dedicated this Memphis honour to my legendary Veterinary Surgeon dad.
I ended this extraordinary trip with 5 nights at the Mandarin Oriental, Miami. It is interesting that Mandarin Oriental are far kinder than Four Seasons over my rates at present. My Peruvian dinner with GM Flavia was remarkable, as much for her company, as the sublime food.

At that hotel comments to Victor on the bar about the ice at breakfast meant I found large cubes of ice at breakfast the next day, as well as when I used their attractive infinity pool. Must also sincerely thank Stephen Head of F&B and Julian Head of Housekeeping.

Will be sad when that Mandarin Oriental closes at the end of 2024. The new Mandarin Oriental hopes to open in 2030.

You will find more photos of gifts & comments about noteworthy members of staff on Instagram, Twitter, Threads & Facebook. A '7 teddies' (🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻) trip. When you meet me I can show even more photos and prove I am no 'fake'!
Picture
Richard (GM of Four Seasons, Nashville) welcomed me to this one-year-old Four Seasons with a glass of Veuve Clicquot champagne and personally took my drinks order on my last evening.
Picture
Had one of the best meals of my life at 'Locust' in Nasville. The Noma style food, the energy of the staff, & the "irasshaimase" style welcome just blew my mind.
Picture
My breakfast with Greg (GM of The Guest House at Graceland) & TC, his Manager, changed my life. Greg is the sort of veteran hotel professional I adore & swapping stories of our time in Doha with TC was fascinating.
Picture
My Ultimate VIP Tour of Elvis' Graceland was another dream come true.
Picture
I was surprised to be given the Presidential Suite at The Peabody Hotel in Memphis and shocked (in a good way!) to follow in the steps of Oprah, Patrick Swayze, Emeril Lagasse, Joan Collins, George Hamilton etc & be made an Honorary Duckmaster.
Picture
Flavia (GM of Mandarin Oriental, Miami) is destined for great things in Mandarin Oriental Group. In this photo she holds Pamela the flamingo.

Life Continues - London & Shrewsbury - September 2022

Since I returned to London, so many people have been too kind to me.

This ranges from the mother of my godson, & one of my best friends, taking me to afternoon tea at Fortnum & Mason to celebrate my new banking Board role; The Dorchester inviting me for a complimentary cocktail on their roof; and Four Seasons at Ten Trinity Square treating me to 'free' Veuve Clicquot champagne & presenting me with a napkin 'teddy bear' embroidered with my initials.

I am off to Shropshire again next week to spend more quality time with mum & dad.

Four Seasons Downtown New York - My Best Stay There  EVER! - New York, USA - September 2022

22/9/2022

I learnt about HM the Queen's death while having coffee at The Peninsula hotel in New York. This, & the subsequent mourning period, have left me in a strange state. Problems trying to send my niece in Moscow a birthday present have not helped.

Anyway, my latest stay at Four Seasons Downtown New York was so special, I cannot delay posting about it any further.

Despite being allocated suite 911, in a week when I was flying on 9/11, it was my best stay there EVER!

From Manager Pablo & Jessica, who originated from North Wales, welcoming me; to a suite with stunning views of The Oculus, a bottle of Veuve Clicquot champagne, Steiff teddy bears & a rich chocolate teddy bear cake; the warmth of my welcome from the spa/ pool staff; finding Four Seasons Manhattan/ Midtown staff have found work at Four Seasons Downtown  & Four Seasons launching their 'Luxury Is Our Love Language' while I was staying at the hotel, it could not have been a more perfect stay.

However, an evening that started with General Manager Thomas, where he pointed out the martini on the Wolfgang Puck menu had been named after me & played the James Bond 007 theme music,  while the martini was prepared by our table, seemed impossible to improve. However,  my hero Chef Daniel Boulud (who was staying in the hotel) then join us.

When I met Chef Wolfgang Puck at 45 Park Lane he talked at Daniel and then we meet a few months later. I ended that evening eating Wolfgang Puck Japanese Wagyu thinking life does not get better than this.

Hope the photos below help to explain why this was stay was a '7 teddies' (🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻) experience, despite Four Seasons Downtown not being in a New York location that is ideal for me. Tip: if you decided to visit Peter Luger's, take cash & do not expect WiFi. Their bacon is extraordinary but Mr Puck's steaks are far better.

April 2022 & The Promise of New Possibilities to Build a Brighter Future - London/ Shrewsbury

28/4/2022

PictureVeuve Clicquot managed to trademark the 'yellow' colour Pantone 137c used since 1877 & I am proud to have a mug commemorating this and their 250th Anniversary.
I have completed my contract with Citi and am now on a break. I intend to use the next few months to help mum more and visit friends in Dubai, Doha & Panama.

So excited that I will get to stay on the 70th Floor of the Burj Khalifa.; in a suite at the refurbished Four Seasons, Doha & at the new Mandarin Oriental, Doha. Just as in Madrid, I will be able to compare the Four Seasons & Mandarin offerings.

April 2022 has been quite a month. I have eaten the best Easter Egg of my life at The Ivy, West Street. It was filled with creamy passion fruit &  served on a Kataif nest. My Veuve Clicquot breakfast at 'The Sunny Side Up Cafe' pop-up was memorable too. Chef Andi (Andrea) Oliver's Waffles with spiced maple syrup were delicious and hearing Canadian singer Charlotte Cardin's reinterpretation of The Beatles song 'Good Day Sunshine', celebrating #SolaireCulture, was inspiring.

Hope you enjoy the photos below & I am looking forward to some more '7 teddy' experiences over the new few months.

The Mandarin Oriental Ritz in Madrid. Luxury & Opulence on Another Level - Madrid, Spain - October 2021

PictureSpot the second bottle of Veuve Clicquot for this bath experience.
My stay at the Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid was overshadowed by receiving the news that we had lost Bermuda legend, & close friend, Marcia Woolridge-Allwood.  However, think Marcia would have loved to see the photos below and hear about my breathtaking suite with Veuve Clicquot on ice; my Dom Perignon experience with General Manager superstar Greg; a rose head bath prepared by Head Butler Claudia & her consummate professional butler team; Eugenie at the white marble & chanderliered pool; so many varieties of water, after my 'Perrier complaint' at the Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong; my photo on the water bottles; the bar staff who knew me from Mandarin Oriental, Hyde Park; the butler team's help with my packing of fragile items from Four Seasons, Madrid etc

Last week I was honoured to be invited to a key Mandarin Oriental party in London. At that we talked about the issues over merging the iconic Ritz, Madrid with Mandarin Oriental. My stay illustrated this is still a work in progress but will be worth it. Hope the photos below evidence all that has already been achieved.

A Far Better COVID-19 Christmas 2020 Than We Expected - Shrewsbury, England - December 2020

PictureMy beautiful niece meets Eric, the Steiff sloth; a Shropshire family Christmas calls for Tanners Wines' champagne; & my mother's expertly cooked roast goose Christmas lunch.
Despite London moving to Tier 4, we managed to have another very special family Shropshire Christmas.

With fine wines chosen by dad; mum's legendary cooking and my niece there, it could not have gone any better.

I gave a Chanel gift to mum; Tanners Wines & Fortnums gifts to my brother & father; a Steiff gift to my charming niece and my godson loves his Swiss Army Knife, with his name engraved on the blade. I gave some of my best gifts this year.

I received Veuve Clicquot champagne; The Glenlivet whisky; Silent Pool gin; Paul Smith socks; The White Company sleep products; Elton John's new book; a personalised mug from a friend in Qatar that I treasure; an umbrella that is a piece of art from Mandarin Oriental, Hyde Park etc. So happy with all my beautiful/ thoughtful gifts too.

Hope the photos below illustrate how lucky I feel to have such outstanding friends & a one-off family.

Featured in The Sunday Times Wine Club Blog & My Yayoi Kusama La Grande Dame 2012 Veuve Clicquot Arrived - Shrewsbury/ London - October 2020

5/11/2020

PictureI think my charming & beautiful niece has my eyes. This photo was taken after we went to see the leaping salmon on the River Severn in Shrewsbury.
October 2020 was the month when my friend Will Lyons, The Sunday Times wine critic, featured my photo in The Sunday Times Wine Club blog and my Yayoi Kusama designed La Grande Dame 2012 Veuve Clicquot arrived & it looked even more spectacular than I had hoped for.

However, it was also the month of my niece's 10th birthday & I am even more proud of the job we did making that so special and to ensure her half-term was full of fun, despite her mum having to be in Moscow & her dad in Dublin. A special mention has to go to Kerry Jones at Bloom for Budding Artists in Shrewsbury for her Yayoi Kusama inspired Halloween pumpkin prints workshop. I took it as a fortuitous omen that this was being run!

Despite two trips to Shropshire to support family, ladened down with Hamleys and Fortnum & Mason gifts,  I did manage to try the London 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' experience in Harrods. The room is exquisitely decorated and the staff better than in New York but the food disappointing, compared with my scrambled eggs with truffles in Manhattan. It did not help that, as the first booking of the day (10am), I had to wait outside in the cold rain for the doors of The Tiffany Blue Box Cafe at Harrods to open at 10am.

I also bought Lebanese wine again in October and would encourage people do what they can support that beleaguered country.  At the same, I did all I could to promote The Market Hall Shrewsbury, with its high quality fresh local produce.

Before 'Lockdown 2' was announced I also managed to squeeze in a delightful afternoon tea at The Wolseley, with one of my most legendary hotel contacts; a sublime Gordon Ramsay Sunday lunch at The Savoy Grill; & collect more superb Dorchester hotel flowers from designer florist Philip Hammond.  While collecting the latter, I was able to have long chats with Robert (GM of The Dorchester) and John (GM of 45 Park Lane).  All this means I am now 'ready' for the next 4 weeks without visiting a hotel.

With England now in COVID-19 'Lockdown 2', & the results of the US Election still uncertain, hope my photos from last month below help to raise everyone's spirits a little. Good luck to us all!

Celebrating a Birthday in the Midst of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Crisis - Shrewsbury, Shropshire, UK - March 2020

28/3/2020

Picture
When I received this personalised Veuve Clicquot signature arrow tin with its iridescent lid, I felt confident about my 2020 birthday.  The original plan was to stay at the new Four Seasons in Madrid to celebrate, I know their General Manager from New York & Hong Kong and so it would have been an exceptional trip.

Since then the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has halted travel, closed hotels, restaurants, gyms etc and changed our lives.

I am now in Shrewsbury in Shropshire helping my parents with their self-isolation. My birthday will, therefore, be a small family affair. Today is my 'Birthday Eve' and so I have decided to post some photos to cheer us all up.

Stay safe, healthy & positive all at this difficult time & hope the photos below make you smile too.  My awesome mum will ensure I have a '7 teddies' (🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻) birthday tomorrow.

Paris, London & New York - December 2019 to January 2020

17/2/2020

PictureIt was awesome to finally meet energetic GM Susanne at Mandarin Oriental New York & Director of Guest Relations Mark there was a joy to chat with.
Sorry for my silence but I have been very busy with Banking Consultant related issues.

I have constructive feedback for Virgin Atlantic Upper Class re: the large inflexible dining table that is part of their new A350 configuration and the surrender of Four Seasons control to Wolfgang Puck over the CUT bar at Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown.

At the same time I must highlight the Grant Achatz truffle cocktail sent to my Central Park view 49th floor suite at Mandarin Oriental New York; the truffle cheeses, with grated fresh black & white truffles and Bresaola air-dried, salted beef from Uruguay to welcome me at my Hudson suite at Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown Town and chilled bottles of Veuve Clicquot champagne at both hotels.

Also need to thank Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park for the roast duck congee breakfast, being added to their menu the following week, to celebrate Chinese New Year in London.

Will upload photos re: all this when I have more time but feel free to ask me about all this, when you see me.

My Best Christmas for Years - Shrewsbury, Shropshire, UK - December 2019

2/1/2020

PictureMy niece was just as happy on Boxing Day and her UK grandma & grandpa love spending time with her.
The sheer joy on my sweet niece's face, when she opened my LO.L. Surprise gift from Hamleys, summed up Christmas in Shropshire for me.  A relaxed, happy & perfect family gathering.

We were so luck my niece travelled from Moscow to spend Christmas with us, before heading to Finland for the Russian Orthodox Christmas with her Russian family.

Mum loved my Chanel and Fortnum & Mason gifts and cooked her usual legendary fish pie on Christmas Eve and sublime roast goose Christmas lunch. My brother prepared a feast for lunch on Boxing Day, I treasured my thoughtful gifts and things could not have gone any better.

Hope the photos below evidence why Christmas was such an outstanding '7 teddies' (🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻) family event.

Chic Paris at Christmas. The Four Seasons George V with Legendary Jackie; Veuve Clicquot at the Mandarin Oriental, Paris with Charismatic GM Philippe & Delightful Emilie; & Hotel Plaza Athenee, Paris with Charming Louise - Paris, France - December 2019

Picturewww.sifrew.com with awesome Jackie in the Jeff Leatham Christmas igloo at The Four Seasons George V; Veuve Clicquot champagne at the Mandarin Oriental, Paris; the elegant bar at Hotel Plaza Athenee; and charming Mandarin Oriental, Paris GM Philippe.
The French strikes did not prevent www.sifrew.com having a spectacular time experiencing Paris at Christmas.

At the Four Seasons George V Jeff Leatham's Christmas decorations were even more dazzling/ opulent than I expected.  I was sad to hear Jackie will be retiring next year but this will present another good excuse to visit Paris.

At the Mandarin Oriental, Paris I drank Veuve Clicquot champagne with  charismatic GM Philippe and then delightful Emilie showed me the spectacular four bedroom The Parisian Apartment. It was interesting to see a piece of Zhuang Hong Yi art in the lobby of this hotel.  His work is currently featured at 45 Park Lane.

At the Hotel Plaza Athenee, Paris Dorchester Collection's charming Louise treated me like a VVVIP. It was interesting that my very dry Grey Goose martini there was better than at the Four Seasons George V. I also drank Perrier Fine Bulles for the first time and was fascinated to see a Lego model of the hotel in their exquisite lobby, Lego is the Christmas theme for The Savoy in London.

Hope the photos below give you a taste of how stylish Christmas in Paris is & why it was a '7 teddies' (🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻) experience.

I Really Do Have The Best Parents in The World! - London, UK - July 2019

4/8/2019

I am so lucky to still have both of my parents.  They decided to visit me in London.  It was the first time they had stayed at my Barbican place since my days working for the Bank of England and I decided to show them 'Si Frew's London'.

This included lunch at The Ned hotel; Veuve Clicquot champagne on the balcony at my place; cocktails at the pop-up at Four Seasons @ Ten Trinity Square with breathtaking views of London; dinner outside by the river at Le Pont de la Tour; mum & dad also staying at The Farmers Club; dad & me having Scottish breakfasts at The Farmers Club; seeing 'An Enquiring Mind: Manolo Blahnik at the Wallace Collection'; shopping in Heal's with mum; and checking out the window boxes at Rules in Covent Garden with mum & dad.

It was a '7 teddies' (🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻) experience, with '7 teddy' parents. Hope the photos below do justice to all this.

Nobu; Four Seasons; a 'Free' Magnum of Veuve Clicquot & Friends from my Qatar Days: An Easter in London Like No Other - London, UK - April 2019

23/4/2019

PictureYes, that is a magnum of 'free' Veuve Clicquot & the Easter Bunny did know my name!
Thanks, in the main, to Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane for an unbelievable Easter 2019 in London.

From the Four Seasons doormen wishing me happy birthday, to the 'free' magnum of Veuve Clicquot, to the Easter Bunny knowning my name and the Easter Egg desserts being to die for, an Easter Sunday that could not have been better. However, I must also mention a drink with John at 45 Park Lane/the 45 Park Lane candle he gave me with a sumptuously luxuriant smell and my chats with Andre & Alex at Four Seasons Hotel London at Ten Trinity Square on Easter Monday.

Hope the photos below help you to understand why it was such a special weekend.

A '7 teddies' (🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻) 50th birthday continued a little longer with a sublime Easter weekend.

A 50th Birthday Year Like No Other, So Many More Dreams Come True in Japan etc - March 2019

Sorry for the silence but the last few weeks have left me speechless (in the best way).

From a fragrant bath full of orchids, looking out at the Petronas Twin Towers,  in my suite at Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur; to seeing a spectacular Kabuki performance in Tokyo with the astonishing friend who produced the English translation you were reading; to staying at Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Marunouchi, the smallest city Four Seasons in the world & my 'final promise' to Mr Sharp, where an exquisite specially created kimono wearing teddy bear was presented to me; to travelling on the 200 mile per hour Shinkansen ('Bullet Train'), a dream since my 'Blue Peter days'; to drinking rare Four Seasons sake & being given a bottle of sake from Kyoto's oldest sake maker personally labelled for my 50th birthday; to playing 'Tea House games' with a Maiko (an apprentice Geiko/Geisha) at Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto, now have Ichihiro's 'calling card sticker' stuck to the back of my iPhone Xs; to eating Peking Duck sushi & drinking 40 year old Glenfraclas Scotch whisky exclusive to Ritz-Carlton Osaka; and drink Veuve Clicquot champagne on the Imperial Floors of the indomitable Imperial Hotel Tokyo.

This blog, my hotel contacts and my unparalleled friends have made March 2019 one of the best months of my life.  To think I, once, did not want to live past 30! So many photos & video clips to show people and stories to tell.

Must focus on the logistics of my move back to The Barbican in London next and 'restarting' my life there.

A '7 teddies' (🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻) 50th birthday year culminates on 29/30 March 2019 at my phenomenal parents' historic home in Shrewsbury and then at Four Seasons Hotel London at Ten Trinity Square & Le Pont del la Tour overlooking the river Thames. Cannot wait to welcome guests based in Sweden, Uruguay etc

This LVMH Brand Ambassador will be spending Chinese New Year 2019 in Hong Kong, finally staying at the legendary Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong.

I will also have breakfast in the Blue Bar at Four Seasons, Hong Kong. That Four Seasons has a very special place in my heart.

I will be flying Business Class with Cathy Pacific and so am looking forward to eating at the Noodle Bar in The Wing again.

Toasting the 'Year of the Earth Pig' with Veuve Clicquot in Hong Kong will be another '7 teddy' experience & dream come true!

Hilton Pattaya: A Dream Second Stay and a Wedding that was the Highlight of my Far East Trip & a Day I will Never Forget - Pattaya, Thailand - November 2018

16/11/2018

When I left Pattaya in 2015 I was unsure if I would ever return there. However, the wedding of some of my best friends meant I did and I am now so glad about this.

I met superb Hilton, Pattaya GM Rudolf for the first time (he welcomed me in person) and his staff could not have treated this Brand Ambassador better.  Chilled Veuve Clicquot in my room, a rose petal "welcome back" message on the bed, a life-size teddy bear and ever pre-peeled fruit.

They even now serve sparkling water in the 33rd Floor Executive Lounge, did #travelblog www.sifrew.com previous comments on this lead to this improvement?!

The wedding was the highlight of my Far East trip with a Veuve Clicquot cascade/tower, ice sculptures, entertainment flow in and so many of my extraordinary friends from Qatar present. Days as happy as this one are rare in any life.

It was all a credit to the staff of Hilton, Pattaya and I am so grateful to have been included in such an extraordinary event.

🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻(7 out of 5 ‘teddies’) - a '7 teddy' wedding in a '7 teddy' hotel, despite Pattaya! My Tip: the breakfasts in the Executive Lounge are worth a try.

PictureOnly GM Rudolf & his team at the Hilton could make three days in Pattaya this special.

A Mandarin Oriental 'Celebrity Fan' has a Stay at Mandarin Oriental Taipei that Blew My Mind - Taipei, Taiwan - November 2018

A Michelin Star Chef from Mandarin Oriental Milan cooked for me; I was served vintage Veuve Clicquot wherever I wanted it; the hotel is an architectural masterpiece & this Brand Ambassador has never been treated better.

Issy's new Taiwanese outfit is a masterstroke, my 'I'm a FAN' business cards with a QR code taking you straight to the  #travelblog www.sifrew.com site  are winners and Manager Frances & her team are all exceptional.

🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻(7 out of 5 ‘teddies’) - a '7 teddy' experience without any doubt that has left me speechless.  People must stay at Mandarin Oriental Taipei!
