It was an easy decision to pick the Golden Cross as the venue for the dinner. The food there is always excellent, the owners so welcoming and the prices reasonable.
The Libertine The evening started in The Libertine. They had sold all their Grey Goose vodka the night before, and would not be getting more until the next day. However, my very dry martini was still perfect. It is a small bar with young friendly staff who are excellent mixologists. Their cocktails look stunning but the problem is this means getting drinks can take some time. Although the bar was not that busy, there were also no seats free. For our little group, so excited to see each other, this was not a problem. The Golden Cross In the Golden Cross people being tired, having flown in from New York etc, meant we were almost 1/2 the group that had booked. However, we were still welcomed with open arms. Theresa and Gareth are the perfect hosts. We are always made to feel so special. We started sharing some 'snout to tail' platters, as one of my friends said, there is nothing here that I do not adore. Runny Scotch eggs, mouthwatering pork crackling, black pudding to die for etc. Then I had the succulent steak with rich Béarnaise sauce and incredible crisp fries. All the guests were raving about their food and the busy place has such a warm and happy atmosphere. We finished the meal with desserts. I got the ginger ice cream with a brandy snap. You could really taste the ginger and the brandy snap had a delicious burnt toffee like quality. A stunning end to a perfect dinner that definitely got us all in the mood for Christmas. 🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻 (6 out of 5 ‘teddies’) - The Golden Cross is clearly the best place in Shrewsbury for a Christmassy dinner. The evening broke the ‘teddy’ score because of the moreish pork crackling, Theresa’s incredible warmth and the party atmosphere. My tips:- do not think you can grab a quick pre-dinner drink in The Libertine, but it is definitely worth the wait, and you must try sharing the 'snout to tail' starter in The Golden Cross. |
