The purpose of this post is to recommend Jason Atherton’s Aberdeen Street Social restaurant, where I started the evening. One of the best meals of my life.
The Aberdeen Street Social part of the evening did not start well, with the taxi dropping me at the wrong end of Aberdeen Street and me wandering around in the Hong Kong humidity trying to find the place. I ate in Jason Atherton’s Berners Tavern just after The London Edition hotel first opened in 2013 and was unimpressed. The door staff in the Punch Room were very unpleasant, claiming The Dorchester had lied to me when they said they had made us a reservation there. We were allowed to drink in the 'VIP' Punch Room but the cocktails were not good. The whole experience meant I was in a bad mood by the time we ate in Berners Tavern and various teething problems, and mediocre food, made me vow never to return. Aberdeen Street Social was highly recommended by a friend and so I decided to give Jason Atherton one last try, I am so glad I did. I struggled with the menu because there was so many items I wanted to try (eg smoked eel with cured foie gras & nitrogen orange pearls; Wagyu ribeye with truffle mac & cheese etc). However, the Maître d' was decisively helpful (eg "the egg dish is always best"). Staff were relaxed, friendly and spoke perfectly English. They were not only keen to help me choose dishes but the waitress explained them in detail once they arrived. The food was divine. I wanted to lick the plate after the egg, Parmesan and truffle dish and savoured each mouthful of the Iberian pork. The dessert was so refreshing, with such clean flavours. 6 out of 5 'teddies' - I cannot recommend this English restaurant in Hong Kong highly enough. Mouthwatering food and charming helpful staff. | |
